Are Mini Dental Implants an Effective Alternative to Conventional Implants?

Mini dental implants (MDIs) are a scaled-down type of dental implant which is designed to be used in the replacement of damaged or missing teeth. Just as with standard implants MDIs are manufactured from titanium or titanium alloy. They are designed to serve as a foundation for a prosthetic tooth replacement and have the shape of a screw with a spherical head.  They are usually approximately 2mm in diameter as opposed to regular implants which range between 4mm and 6mm across. They were primarily developed to function as an effective means of retaining dentures; however their more compact sizes have resulted in them being employed as the foundation for replacement teeth for patients who have a gap which is too small for a regular implant.

Mini dental implants have a number of advantages over the conventional variety which are commonly used for to support a tooth implant. They have a low rate of failure and complications, but problems may occur as a result of deterioration, although it is less of a problem than with standard implants because they are much easier to remove and replace. They are also considerably more affordable than their traditional counterpart partly due to more simplified treatment as there is no need for the dental surgeon to make an opening in the soft tissues in the mouth; this is due to the relative narrowness of MDIs. There is also a reduced likelihood of the jaw bone or gums becoming weakened or damaged due to the placement of mini dental implants.

MDIs are a versatile type of implant which can be used as a tooth root structure or for to retain dentures. Their miniature proportions ensure that they are less difficult to insert in restricted areas of the mouth.
